The first time I got to know Sedgwick, a pioneer and giant in queer study, was when reading Chizuko’s “Misogyny” which is built up on an illuminating and solid fundation of male homosocial desire theory. The cover, Manet’s ” Le déjeuner”, is either an explicit or an implicit of an invisible social bond between men ——woman. Ridiculous as she is ,being naked and smiling shamlessly. Muse as she could be flattered by the surrounding gentlemen, or dirty erotic illusion as she might be objectified by playwright. Manet’s work is a metaphor. A metaphor of distorted social position of woman, an incriminating lure for men, a marginalized gender subset in male homosociety.
Questions that every modern human is hesitatant or reluctant to answer: What are women ? What is gender? Are we entrapped in our own civilization that succumbs to internal power relationships in long term ?
